About

Mark Playne is a multi-award-winning writer and director whose life reads like an adventure story.

After graduating from film school in Manchester, he carved out a lifestyle that encompassed his key passion of world travel whilst creating enterprises to support himself – enabling him to see new countries meet new people and research future stories.

Mark has lived and worked in all the habitable continents, absorbing himself in everything from the culture and politics, to catching exotic diseases and has even been quarantined on the return to the UK - twice!

He’s had run-ins with various mafias including the Japanese Yakuza, the Colombian underworld and the Chinese Triads who nearly killed him. He’s been deported, escaped massive hotel fires and survived high-speed car crashes. He’s met assassins and ‘interviewed’ people who had ‘died’ years before. He’s been set up in a complex sting operation in Istanbul and framed in a Spanish drug bust. He’s been lost in the Sahara and ridden Motorbikes through India and Sri Lanka.

Yet with all the excitement, Mark has always gravitated back to Britain where he’d recharge ‘the batteries’ with family and old friends.

Nowadays, when not in the UK he splits his time between Spain and India.

It was in Spain that a small fishing village became the catalyst for Mark's re-entry to Film. He had the desire to make a film that could travel as far as he had for the past years, called up a few old film friends and the camera was soon rolling.

Love at First Sight was invited to screen in nearly 200 official selections spanning 50 countries and has been honoured with 76 awards, achieving and surpassing his dream. The 35mm of the film has subsequently been archived by the BFI.

Alongside nine other directors of varying nationalities, Mark was commissioned as the British representative to make a film aimed at nudging the commencement of reconciliation between the Turkish and Armenian people after the events of 1915. The result was 2 by 2 a sci-fi comedy that also bears the Mark Playne touch of stories that break barriers with humour. 2 by 2 has won many awards and is currently is screening worldwide.

Mark has served on film festival Juries in the UK, France and Hollywood.

His debut novel is 3 Seconds in Bogotá, a thriller based on one of many true adventures from his travels - a story that most of us would find unimaginable!

Mark is currently writing a novel based on one of his feature scripts set in Morocco called MoMo.
